Horringer Singers

Origins

singersHorringer Singers have their origins in 1972 when a group of villagers, led by Miss Winifred Newberry, joined together to sing carols. They enjoyed themselves so much that they decided to continue, thus the seeds of today's choir were sown . . .

and now . . . !

The present choir (mixed voices) has a membership of around fifty  and performs a wide repetoire of music, including oratorios, Gilbert & Sullivan, Songs from the Musicals and of course Christmas carols. We present three or four concerts a year, both in the village and further afield, in other villages and in homes for the elderly. We also sing at weddings on request.

The Horringer Singers are members of the National Association of Choirs (Group 20) and attend choir days when the participating choirs total around 300 singers. In recent years we have performed in Ely Cathedral and Peterborough Cathedral  and several other venues in East Anglia including our own cathedral in Bury St Edmunds.

singersWe are most fortunate to have Anne Freeman as our accompanist  and Fred Walker as our musical director
Anne  studied at the Royal Academy of  Music and  has taught in schools and individually, but particularly enjoys accompaning.

Fred started singing as a treble in1942 and has been involved with choral music ever since. Over the years he has had a wide experience of singing with and directing choirs in London, Croydon, West Byfleet, New York and the Hague!  Since  moving to Suffolk he now sings with St Mary’s choir  and  last autumn he became our musical director.

The choir meets for rehersals in Horringer Community Centre on Thursday evenings. We always welcome new members . Previous singing experience and the ability to sight read music is desirable.  All voices  but especially Tenors will be particularly welcome.

We are a happy and friendly choir and have a well deserved reputation for the care and mutual support given by members to each other in times of adversity
